East Lansing Attorney Mike Nichols just updated the West OWI Handbook for Michigan lawyers. “This is the bible for lawyers on DUI law and practice in Michigan,” says Nichols, who is an associate member of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences and an adjunct law professor at Thomas M. Cooley Law School.” Nichols is also on the cutting edge of looking into flaws in the analysis of blood at the Michigan State Police Crime lab and has led a campaign calling for more transparency (see “Looking into the Vial” elsewhere on this webpage, courtesy of the “Legal News,” Mens Rea column).

Nichols says that the updated sections on chemical testing make the update a ‘must-have.’ The book will include new attachments featuring transcripts during which the state’s only remaining supervisors for breath and blood alcohol testing have been disqualified in their respective areas. Nichols says “Sgt. Perry Curtis and Geoffrey French will admit that they are not qualified in the theories behind breath and blood testing respectively,” he says. Michigan lawyers should know about the fact that budget cuts caused a tremendous brain drain from state government and the quality of forensic science work may be one of the casualties.
