The Michigan State Police launched a new campaign on the eve of the Memorial Day weekend: cracking down on those who are not wearing a seatbelt. Michigan drunk driving attorney Mike Nichols says that the upshot will lead to more drunk driving arrests that start as seatbelt enforcement traffic stops. "A traffic violation, no matter how harmless, can be enough for an officer to detain you," says Nichols. Nichols is a professor of DUI Law and Practice as well as Forensic Evidence in Criminal Law at Cooley Law School in Lansing.

The State Police launched the campaign on Monday May 20th with a press release found here:

The key to giving yourself a chance to maintain your liberty if a seatbelt stop turns into a drunk driving case is to keep your cool and remember that the officer is not your friend. Nichols adds: "the less you say to the officer who stopped you the better off you will be in that situation. Nichols is the also the author of the OWI Practice guide for Michigan lawyers by West Publishing. For the lawyer who is a leader in driving defense, call Mike Nichols at 517 932 4000
