Limits of Detection and Limits of Quantitation in Mass Spectrometry seem like a deep and complex topic on a Saturday morning but it is important for lawyers to know it better than juries, prosecutors and lab analysts. That is why Mike Nichols travelled across the country recently to speak on the topic in the area of drunk and drugged driving defense.

"This was a very long but fun trip and it was great to see the eyes light up when I discussed with the lawyers how easy it is to expose labs when they analysts do a half-hearted job," Nichols says. Nichols spoke with frequent collaborator Jeremy Brehmer of the firm MiddlebrookandBrehmer in Bakersfield, California (www.middlebrookandbrehmer.com). The overall approach was to teach lawyers how to defend the new wave of law enforcement attack on individual rights; drug recognition evaluation. Nichols will be speaking on the same topic to the Criminal Defense Attorneys of Michigan July 26th in Gaylord at the annual "CLE in the woods" summer seminar.

Nichols is also THE private practice attorney to speak to lawyers and judges at the Ingham County Bar Association Bench-Bar Conference October 18th. Nichols and Honorable Hugh Clarke of the 54A District Court will lead the criminal law breakout session. This is a bi-annual meeting of lawyers and judges in Ingham County, which is the county that includes East Lansing, Lansing, Okemos, Meridian Township, Mason, Holt, Delhi Township, Lansing Township and the Michigan State University Public Safety Department. It leads the entire state in drunk driving arrests.

Nichols will also be organizing and speaking at the fall Michigan Association of OWI Attorneys conference on drunk driving defense and new issues. He is secretary of the organization and a founding member.
