Medical Marijuana Movement Now Becomes Legalization Movement: Hazel Park and Oak Park Join Decriminalize Marijuana Possession

By Michael Nichols
Categories: Josh Covert, Medical Marijuana

Citizens in two Michigan cities, Oak Park and Hazel Park, voted August 5th to decriminalize the possession of an ounce or less of marijuana provided that an adult possesses it and it is possessed on private property.  Oak Park and Hazel Park now join a growing list of Michigan cities where the possession of marijuana has been decriminalized to some extent.  Detroit, Ferndale, Ann Arbor, Flint, Grand Rapids, Lansing, Jackson and Ypsilanti have all previously decriminalized small possession of marijuana for adults. Although many cities have decriminalized adult possession of Marijuana, the citizens of those cities can still be arrested and prosecuted under state law and/or federal law.

“This is another step in the right direction.  I think the writing is on the wall and that Michigan as a state needs to decriminalize adult possession of marijuana” says attorney Joshua Covert.  “Our legislators will hopefully accept that most of our largest cities have decriminalized adult possession of marijuana and decriminalization appears to be what the citizens of our state want.”  Josh Covert is a skilled practitioner who focuses on the area of marijuana and medical marijuana. He has litigated successfully many cases in which individuals were charged with possessing and or manufacturing marijuana – both patients and non-patients alike.
