Michigan's Medical Marijuana Attorney Josh Covert: Several Michigan Municipalities Join the Legalization Movement

The trend to make marijuana legal continued in Michigan this November. Medical Marijuana attorney Josh Covert observes: "On Tuesday, November 4th, six Michigan municipalities passed ballot proposals decriminalizing possession of small amounts of marijuana by adults on private property."

The six municipalities reflect a trend as they join 11 other communities that already passed similar measures in the last 4 years.  Today was a big day for the marijuana legalization movement," says Covert. Covert adds:  "Today prominent  Michigan cities like Mt. Pleasant and Saginaw join Lansing, Detroit, Jackson, Grand Rapids, Flint and several others in the shift towards more sensible drug laws and policy.

Covert points out that it now looks like that most all of the major population centers in Michigan have agreed that marijuana use and possession by adults should not be a criminal offense. Despite that, the United States Attorneys Office for the Western District of Michigan continues to prosecute marijuana cases. Covert is already involved in at least 2 cases in which The Nichols Law Firm is representing medical marijuana patients who are prohibited from even talking state law in court as part of their defense.

The six municipalities where legalization measures passed are as follows: Huntington Woods, Berkley, Pleasant Ridge, Saginaw, Mt. Pleasant and Port Huron.  Although the changes made on Tuesday are a step in the right direction, Citizens of those communities still need to be aware that the state and federal laws regarding marijuana have not changed.  Officers in those communities can and probably still will enforce state law.  If you have been charged with a marijuana offense and want lawyers on the cutting edge of marijuana laws and who are committed to results call the lawyers at the Nichols Law Firm at 517-432-9000.
