By Michael Nichols
Categories: Michael J. Nichols

Matthew Heos joined the Nichols Law Firm on July 3rd, 2017. Heos brings litigation experience and is a "Super Lawyers Rising Star" for his work in litigation in cases under the Drain Code. "Matt is a knowledgable, hard-working lawyer and litigator, who is a great fit for the Personal Injury practice with his dad, James Heos and Wendy Schiller-Nichols," says founding member Mike Nichols. I expect that the experience Matt has in criminal defense is also going to give him a great platform from which to dive in on the way we are committed to results and defend drunk and drugged driving cases throughout Michigan." Nichols adds that Mr. Heos already has developed a practice in helping applicants obtain a license to process or grow marijuana in Michigan under the new legislation that will take effect in 2018.

Matthew was born and raised in Lansing/East Lansing, Michigan. He was raised by dedicated parents, Cassandra (Cassie) a teacher at East Lansing High School and James, a hard-nosed trial attorney. He graduated from East Lansing High School then Michigan State University. He is diverse. Matt began a career in finance but realized that, just like his father and sister, the practice of law was his passion.

In law school, Matt focused his legal education on environmental law. Matt graduated from Thomas M. Cooley Law School in January 2010, then started practicing that May after passing the Bar Exam on the 1st try. Matthew developed a reputation in matters ranging from criminal defense and medical marihuana cases, to automobile negligence, No Fault, and premises liability cases.

Matthew’s practice expanded to include matters involving the Michigan Drain Code. Matthew worked on several county drain projects from petition to assessment. Matthew has litigated drain matters and private flooding cases. Super Lawyer’s Magazine has named Matthew as a Rising Stars for state, local and municipal law from 2014 – 2017 for his work on county drain projects and related litigation.

When the Michigan legislature enacted the Michigan Medical Marihuana Facilities Licensing Act, Matt expanded further to include licensing matters relative to the Act. MMFLA licenses will be aggressively pursued and multiple issues and challenges will arise as the State begins to accept applications at the end of 2017. Matt is a member of the Ingham County Bar Association as well as several sections of the State Bar including Environmental, Negligence and the new Marihuana section.
