"The judge was very thoughtful and spent extensive time considering the right thing to do" said attorney Mike Nichols. Mike Nichols added: "it was one of the longest sentencings in a state district court in my 10 years of practice."  The judge granted the Nichols Law Firm's request to use a provision under the Code of Criminal Procedure to delay sentence and give the defendant the opportunity to show that he is worthy of leniency.  The client will have 8 months to undergo alcohol treatment classes, perform community service, pay fines and costs and verify sobriety.  "If the client is sucessful, the Court indicated that it will probably not impose any jail time or impose the ban from campus," said Nichols.  Thousands of students and others gathered in a neighborhood near campus on April 5th and 6th, prompting East Lansing Police to disperse them with tear gas and other munitions. Thousands were arrested. One of the harshest penalties imposed was the ban from any public college or community college campus. Just about every defendant convicted was sentenced to jail time, some as much as 60 days, and banned from campus.  The Nichols Law Firm's client in this case was acquitted of a charge of assembling to riot. However, the jury convicted him of a charge of hindering a police officer.  You can read more about the case as well as the entire cedarfest riot at www.lsj.com.
