Finding the right Law Firm and Lawyer

By Michael Nichols

I had a friend of mine who suffered a serious injury from an automobile accident. Her husband called me and I met them at the hospital. When she said to me, “Thank God for friends who are attorneys,” it made me realize that not everyone has a friend who is an attorney and/or knows how to find an attorney should the need arise. Therefore, I thought that a few notes on how to find an attorney might be helpful. First, let me say where NOT to look for your attorney: the Yellow Pages. Maybe before google, the place to look for a personal injury attorney who specialized in auto accidents was the Yellow Pages; however, with today’s technology, it is impossible for the Yellow Pages to provide the type of information that is available through a google search. The first place to start a search is the internet. Just about every lawyer has (or should have) a website. In the website, you can find mass information regarding the attorney and the law firm. You may be provided with information such as the lawyer’s practice area, testimonials from past clients, videos on certain areas of law, blogs related to the area of law you are searching, laws, discussions, and statutes. Another way to find an attorney could be a referral from a friend who knows an attorney. These are two excellent ways to find attorneys who specialize in the area you are looking such as auto accident attorney or OWI attorney. Whatever the case may be, you should contact that attorney, meet with them in person to make a decision as to whether you and the attorney are going to be able to work together. If the attorney you meet with loves to work on cases such as auto negligence, and your case is a car crash caused by a negligent driver, then you may have found a good fit.
