We take you under our wing. We protect you. We are your guardian angels when no one else seems to care. You want to hear about an example? A client is in a horrific accident in a bus. This bus is not a “mass transit bus” – like the Detroit or even the Lansing busing system. It is a bus in a more rural area.
The client takes this “transit system” every day. On this day, the bus is involved in an accident. Who is at fault? Not our hero. He is hurt and hurt badly. You see, “Duane” (names creatively modified to protect our client’s privacy) is on this transit bus. He takes the bus every day to work. He takes the bus everyday home. He trusts the bus. Every day; year in; year out – Duane relies on this bus to get him from a hotel at which he rents an apartment to his home.
OK – we know what you’re thinking – this guy lives in a hotel. How can you put value on his life and on his existence if he lives in a hotel?
The 47th President of the United States (and the 45th) live in a hotel before and between and probably after living in the White House. So, who cares if he lives in a hotel. His life and his existence have meaning.
Our hero, Duane is hurt so badly that he cannot go back to work. Leg shattered; teeth knocked out; NECK BROKEN! That’s right – when we first met Duane, he was in a hard collar that was so uncomfortable that he kept turning his head out of habit and wincing within the next half-second. Ouch.
Yet, within 2 weeks, even though Duane was visibly hurt and in great pain the landlords of the hotel at which he was living for over a year, tried to kick him out. We get a text “they told me that I have to be out by noon.” What? We start researching. Our law clerks dive in to the stacks of books for answers; we research our Westlaw database. We rely on friends who engage in regular Landlord-Tenant practice.
It turns out – the landlord cannot just “kick him out.” More on the issues there in a separate blog, but suffice to say that Wendy Schiller-Nichols jumped in her car on a freezing Thursday afternoon, drove to the hotel and showed the landlord what she was able to obtain from Duane’s doctors: he’s off-work; he’s got a shattered knee and (Wendy again) with some lobbying – we got the landlords to switch the script.
As this is “going to press” – our client, Duane does not have to sleep outside or worry about any of those concerns for now. He’s got a warm bed. Wendy even convinced the landlord, to move Duane from an upstairs room to a downstairs room. THAT is what we do. THAT is what it means to be “committed to results” – even if we are simply trying to do damage control until we can win your case for you and win your life back for you.
