1996, the United States Justice Department initiated a taskforce to investigate questionable forensic evidence produced by the FBI Crime Lab. The taskforce completed its investigation in 2004. The results? The FBI Lab had produced flawed, unreliable evidence in up to 7,000 criminal cases. Further, the unreliable evidence directly and materially led to the convictions of at least 250 citizens and partially contributed to thousands of others. The Justice Department released the results of investigation to prosecutors involved in directly affected cases, but to not to the public at large. As a result, many convicted citizens are just now learning their convictions are the result of unreliable forensic evidence.
