What should you do if bitten by a dog?
If you are injured, you should receive medical attention. You should also contact the local animal control agency to report the incident.
Obtain copies of the following:
- Medical records
- Any written report to the animal control agency
- Photos of the injury
- Medical and prescription receipts

The laws used to determine dog owner liability for dog bites or attacks include:
- Dog Bite Statute – When the dog has not been provoked, the owner is responsible for the injury.
- One-Bite Rule - When the owner knew or should have known of the dog’s dangerous propensities, the owner or keeper of the dog may be responsible for the injury.
- Negligence Laws - Common-law Strict Liability – When the owner/keeper/ possessor (temporary caretaker) was careless in handling the dog and had prior knowledge of a propensity to attack, the owner/keeper/ possessor may be liable for the injury.
