The 2011 Michigan drunk driving audit shows that the number of drunk driving injuries were down for the year. "That does not mean that police and prosecutors are going to be any less aggressive," says Lansing DUI-OWI-OUIL attorney and expert Mike Nichols. Nichols added: "the Michigan State Police issued a press release that sent a strong signal to all of us - they are going to target drugged driving in the future." Nichols is the author of the Michigan OWI Handbook by West publishing.
The audit is a requirement under Michigan law. The state police must compile and report statistics on drunk driving. "The fact that the department even analyzed drugged driving speaks volumes about the concerns within the department - they need to collect fees and generate demand for the department's services," Nichols added.
