By Michael Nichols
OWI-DUI-OUIL expert Mike Nichols, an attorney, author and law professor, has been named as a presenter at the 2012 American Academy of Forensic Sciences annual conference in Atlanta Georgia. "This is an incredibly humbling development in my career," said Nichols. He added: If you read the group's mission statement: 'The American Academy of Forensic Sciences is a multi-disciplinary professional organization that provides leadership to advance science and its application to the legal system. The objectives of the Academy are to promote professionalism, integrity, competency, education, foster research, improve practice, and encourage collaboration in the forensic sciences,' it speaks volumes about the high level of intellect and scientific curiosity among the people who belong to the organization and who will attend this conference.
The presentation will be about Michigan Rule of Evidence (MRE) 703. The title of the abstact that Mr. Nichols submitted is "Michigan Rule of Evidence 703, an example of fairness." The rule prohibits an expert witness from introducing hearsay into evidence through his or her testimony. Mr. Nichols will describe the rule and discuss its application as well as the benefit of the rule in preserving the integrity of the expert's testimony as that which is based on known facts as opposed to speculation.
