DUI-OUIL-OWI ARRESTS WILL SKYROCKET ON THANKSGIVING EVE IN LANSING, EAST LANSING AND ALL OVER MICHIGAN
Categories: Drunk-Driving

The biggest bar night of the year in Michigan is now one of the biggest bust nights of the year for police officers enforcing Michigan's drunk driving laws. "Police arrested nearly 100 more citizens for drunk driving in 2010 on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving than on any other Wednesday of the year," says East Lansing attorney Mike Nichols, citing a press release issued by the Michigan State Police on Tuesday, November 21. Nichols added: "if you are out, designate a driver or leave your keys at home and call a cab. Many cases in which a person is arrested for drunk driving start with a plan for a safe ride home but end badly because the plan is not executed."

Mike Nichols is an expert in Michigan's OWI-laws. Nichols wrote the book on OWI for Michigan Lawyers by West publishing, is an adjunct professor at Thomas M. Cooley Law School in Lansing and is a frequent lecturer on Michigan drunk driving law. He adds: "I can't think of any reason why a person should take a portable breath test/pbt at the roadside. I would never advise someone to break the law but if you politely decline to take the pbt from an officer, the only sanction is a $200.00 fine; it won't affect your license in any way." Nichols has 2 more tips: "always be respectful and say as little as possible if you are pulled over and you have been drinking and finally, you can politely decline the roadside sobriety tests. So, just remember the 2 words: 'no thank you' on Thanksgiving." You can read the media releases from the Michigan State Police by following the links below.
