Ever wonder what mathematics have to do with drunk driving? Sometimes it can mean everything. Attorney Mike Nichols of East Lansing co-authored a chapter for Aspatore Publishing called "DUI Mathematics." Nichols says, "this was a joint effort with an extremely intelligent physicist who wrote a very easy to read passage on a difficult subject matter - how to cross check the government's work using statistics and science."
Nichols is the author of the "Michigan OWI Handbook" for West Publishing, which will be updated in September, 2012. "I was extremely busy this year balancing my family, my practice and my writing and educational demands. However, this was a project in honor of Ted Vosk, Esq., a lawyer-scientist who taught me so much about the use of metrology in drunk driving cases. Ted has led the way in bringing metrology to courtrooms to fully inform jurors and I was honored to help update the chapter that he initially wrote that educated so many of us
Nichols hopes that this will help lawyers find the nuggets to expose flawed forensic work by crime labs. "For example, the government fails to report in Michigan the proper standard deviation for the measurements performed in a drunk driving or drugged driving case," says Nichols. The chapter will be released as part of the "Inside the Minds" series in 2012. Nichols is also planning to teach "DUI Law and Practice" at Thomas M. Cooley Law School during the fall of 2012.
