SIGNIFICANTLY REDUCED JAIL TIME FOR NICHOLS LAW FIRM CLIENT WHO SHOWED SIGNS OF HOPE TO JUDGE

By Michael Nichols
Categories: OWI

Attorney Karen Phillips walked into the courtroom in Eaton County, Michigan, with a client facing sentencing by a District Court judge.  The probation officer recommended one year in jail and the deck was stacked against Ms. Phillips and her client.  The client was young and despite a criminal record, indicated that he was ready for probation and treatment for his involvement with controlled substances.  The judge became hopeful for his recovery, as he has siblings to be a role model for and a child on the way.  The client received only 30 days in jail, instead of the one year requested by probation officer, and probation.  As the client was leaving the courtroom, the judge asked a question Ms. Philips never heard before – please stop in and let me know how you are doing.
