THE HEAD OF THE MICHIGAN CRIME LAB RESIGNS AND MIKE NICHOLS REACTS

By Michael Nichols
Categories: Michael J. Nichols

Michigan drunk driving attorney Mike Nichols of East Lansing reacted to the resignation of state crime lab chief John Collins: “I wish him well,” says Nichols. He adds: “Mr. Collins told me he would allow a tour of the toxicology section by members of the Michigan Association of OWI Attorneys. The tour never came together and I hope that his successor follows through.”

The crime lab was awarded accreditation July 26, 2012 by the American Society of Crime Lab Directors Laboratory Accreditation Board after responding or correcting over 100 practices, procedures and other issues in the 8-lab system. Nichols said “while I think that more research and investigation will continue about the ASCLAD-LAB accreditation, what took so long, whether there may be some remaining concerns and what questions linger about casework that took place during the ‘extension’ phase before re-accreditation, Mr. Collins is certainly not to be blamed for moving on in his career and I wish him the best.”

Nichols is author of the Michigan OWI Handbook by West Publishing, co-author of “DUI Mathematics” a chapter in the “Inside the Minds” series by Aspatore Publishing and an adjunct professor of DUI Law and Practice at Cooley Law School. Nichols has gone to trial on over 100 OWI cases. mnichols@nicholslaw.net
