Drunk driving attorney Mike Nichols lead a tour of other attorneys of the Michigan State Police Lansing Lab on September 28. "I was pleased that so many attorneys took time to join this tour. I also thank Greg Michaud, the new lab director and Geoff French, the supervisor," says Nichols
Nichols got the idea to push for the tour from DUI attorney Jeremy Brehmer of Bakersfield, California. Nichols says, "Mr. Brehmer wrote lab directors across the country along with attorney Richard Middlebrook and Justin McShane of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania a few years ago. The lab initially failed to respond, then declined but I followed up with former lab director John Collins who approved the tour. Captain Michaud agreed when he took over the system to make it happen since we were unable to do the tour before Mr. Collins left.
The tour started with a dialogue between the attorneys present and Michaud and French. Nichols says "this was critical because we agreed on specific language to use for requests for documentation that they say exists but we were never provided. We also discussed other concerns like testimony about retrograde extrapolation among other things."
The attorneys invited were members of the Michigan Association of OWI Attorneys, which Nichols helped to start in 2011 along with Brehmer.
