East Lansing DUI attorney Mike Nichols reacted to public statements by Michigan State University basketball coach Tom Izzo that “I’ll never be accused of drunk driving” in a press conference in which Izzo encouraged people to get a safe ride during the NCAA March Madness tournament after drinking. Nichols says “Coach Izzo’s sentiments were heartfelt. I think the world of Tom Izzo and what he has done for this community. I, too lost friends in Northern Michigan to drunk driving accidents. I think his advice is spot on: do not drink and drive. If you drink, absolutely do not have more than 2 standard 12 ounce drinks or call for a ride.” Nichols lives in East Lansing, is a fan of Michigan State University sports, where he attended undergraduate school and is often contacted to help athletes and other members of the university community with legal trouble.
“I am struck by claims of correlation between events and drunk driving by people. The first problem that I have with claims that more people drive drunk during certain times of year or events is that people who drive drunk might use an event as an excuse but not a cause. Further, the statistics may reflect a correlation between the two things but it is probably because more law enforcement officers are targeting this particular crime,” says Nichols, who is also an adjunct professor of DUI Law and Practice and Forensic Evidence at Cooley Law School in Lansing and author of the West OWI Handbook for Michigan lawyers.
