Michigan DUI/DUID attorney Mike Nichols is seen by many as THE drunk driving attorney in Michigan. He was quoted this week (3.30.2015) in MIRS, a newsletter covering state government. Nichols says that Governor Snyder's use of the "pardon" power to "undo" a DUI conviction from 2007 for a connected attorney in Oakland County raises eyebrows.
However, the article: "Snyder's Pardon of Political Appointee Raises Eyebrows" quotes Nichols as saying that there is a "silver lining" behind what seems otherwise distasteful. Nichols told reporter Kyle Melnin that he "appreciates it in the fact that it highlights how serious DUI convictions are to a person's life."
Nichols also made the important point that this news coverage should highlight the fact that juries can return a not guilty verdict just because they do not want a person convicted of drunk driving. Nichols, who lives in Meridian Township and has a primary office in East Lansing, said "You have the right to find someone not guilty in the face of the law and the facts," ... "The Governor can do it and so can you."
