Spartan Fans Show Class to Celebrate the BIG Football Championship - East Lansing Police Report a Quiet Night After Penn State Win

East Lansing Police report a quiet night after the Michigan State University Spartans clinched the East Division of the BIG football conference with a win Saturday night over the Penn State Nittany Lions on November 28th. East Lansing Police Sgt. Andrew Bouck told the Lansing State Journal Sunday: "it was a good night." There was one fire and just a few arrests despite the unusually warm weather and record-setting win.

East Lansing attorney and Spartan alumni Mike Nichols says "we would gladly bypass 'business opportunity' for the Spartan nation to hush the critics in 2 ways - a huge win and a quiet celebration." Nichols says "the countless text messages I received and social media posts I observed with people taking shots like "hide your couches" and the usual trite comments made this a happy 'downturn' in new business from my perspective." There have been several high-profile episodes of couches burning and student celebrations that police used tear gas and other tactics to disperse in the last decade-plus.

However, Nichols reports a steady stream of calls with drunk driving charges following the traditional "bar night" on the night before thanksgiving. "It seems like police are fishing for 'stats' to increase their numbers of drunk driving arrests" Nichols says. He adds "on nights like these - it seems like many citizens are 'sitting ducks' as they say."

Numbers from the Michigan State Police are not available yet for their 2015 Thanksgiving Holiday drunk driving crackdown but are expected soon. Nichols recently spoke on an important aspect of drunk driving and drugged driving practice: metrology at the national college for DUI defense metrology conference in Atlanta. He will speak in January and February for the DUI Defense Lawyers of America.
