The Nichols Law Firm, PLLC is helping to fight to put the legalization of marijuana on the Michigan ballot. Josh Covert, a partner at NLF, is on the Board of Directors of MI Legalize. Mr. Covert will help lead the court charge to challenge a recent ruling by the Board of Canvassers for the Secretary of State to disqualify hundreds of thousands of signatures. Covert says "I am confident we will prevail in court. The issue is that the signatures were not all captured within a 180 day window. That window is totally arbitrary. The Michigan Constitution allows for a 4 year period between election cycles."
Organizers for MI Legalize turned in over 300,000 signatures in early June. Within a week, the Board of State Canvassers was presented with a recommendation from the Secretary of State election division to disqualify signatures because they did not fall within the 180 day collection period, and now the question will not be eligible for the 2016 ballot. Covert says "this is the will of the people. The whole point of the ballot initiative is so that the people can have action when its elected legislature refuses to give it action."
Mr. Covert is also going to be among the speakers at the annual "Cannabis Cup" in Clio during the weekend of June 11-12, 2016. It is an honor to be a speaker at one of 6 such events nationwide.
