Iosco County Prosecutor Criticized by Local Press in Anderson Embezzlement Case: Mike Nichols says Favorable Evidence “Hidden” from Public

By Michael Nichols

The Iosco County News-Herald says that the Prosecutor violated the “letter and spirit” of the Michigan Freedom of Information Act in her response to requests for information regarding a high-profile case. In an editorial this week, the newspaper says “if we were endorsing a candidate for the 23rd Circuit Court, we certainly would not endorse the Iosco County Prosecutor.” East Lansing Attorney Mike Nichols is cited as criticizing the prosecutor’s response after reviewing a heavily blacked out set of documents in the editorial. Nichols says that information that exonerates the Iosco Deputy Treasurer, Cathy Anderson, was hidden from the public. A pdf of the editorial can be found here.

81st District Judge Allen C. Yenior is expected to rule any time on Nichols’ objection to a request by the prosecutor to “bindover” the charges to the Circuit Court. Iosco County Prosecutor Nichole Palumbo brought 1 count of “embezzlement by a public official” against Cathy Anderson. Nichols says “the prosecutor brought this case for publicity because she’s running for judge in my opinion. If that is not bad enough, she hid information from the public about what really happened.”
