Mike Nichols’ book: “the Michigan-OWI-Handbook” by a leading national publisher, Thomson Reuters West (www.thomsonreuters.com) was on display at the National College of DUI Defense/National Association of Criminal-Defense-Lawyers conference in Las Vegas Nevada. “I was proud to see the book at the table and get a chance to talk with other leading professionals about developments in defending drinking and drugged drivers,” Nichols said. The National College of DUI Defense is the organization of the world’s top serving and most experienced DUI lawyers. Nichols added: “the work that the NCDD does to train lawyers is incredibly valuable. I am happy to be a part of such a fine organization and I always take away new information and refresh myself on important scientific principles and issues that are necessary for handling DUI-OWI-OUIL cases at a high level.”
One of the biggest changes is the new so-called “superdrunk” statute. Effective October 31, 2010, MCL 257.625(1)(c) now means that any driver convicted of having a bodily alcohol content of .17 or higher is subjected to mandatory substance abuse treatment, a maximum possible jail sentence of one year and the loss of driving privileges for a year. “This is one of the most significant changes in Michigan OWI-OUIL-DUI law in about 5 years,” added Nichols. Nichols is one of the leading criminal defense attorneys and litigators in Michigan. He is the author of the OWI Handbook by West Publishing. The book is in its second edtition. |
