MIKE-NICHOLS-COMMENTS-FOR-LANSING-MEDIA-ON-THE IMPACT OF THE CONGRESSIONAL-VOTE-TO-EXTEND THE USA-PATRIOT-ACT

By Michael Nichols

Lansing-Criminal-Defense-Attorney, author, instructor and expert-on-OWI-DUI-OUIL-Mike-Nichols was asked to comment on the latest vote by Congress extending the so-called “Patriot Act.” “The Patriot Act was passed quickly in October, 2011 in response to the 9-11 attacks and its effect on our individual freedoms rippled throughout the decade,” says Nichols. Mike Nichols studied the response by the British Parliament to the IRA bombings decades ago. Nichols said: “the parallels to Britain’s Prevention of Terrorism Act are stunning and probably deliberate – our legislators needed a model for the Patriot Act. Ironically, we turned to Britain. One of the by-products were false confessions when police were given broad authority to hold people in custody in secret without a bail hearing and without counsel. One of the many terrible stories was depicted in the movie ‘In the Name of the Father’ starring Daniel Day Lewis (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0107207/).
